Gijón is the largest city in Asturias, and was under the Romans too. Thier legacy is still there today: the Campo Valdés Roman Baths, right next to San Lorenzo Beach; he Roman Villa of Veranes; and the Campa Torres Archeological Park. There are also many art galleries and museums to visit, often housed in iconic buildings such as the Revillagigedo Palace. Like Oviedo, it has a World Heritage site, and the largest building in Spain - the 'Universidad Laboral - City of Culture'. In July the 'Semana Negra' book fare, one of the largest in Europe, is celebrated, and brings with it music, art, street food and a large funfare with exciting rides!
What many visitors like best about Gijón are it's beaches, marina, squares and streets full of shops and cafés, and the amazing views from it's headland, 'Cero Catalina', dominated by Chillida's enormous 'Eulogy to the Horizon' sculpture which, when you stand inside it, amplifies the sounds of the wind and the waves crashing into the rocks below.
